Mount Meru
Tanzania's second peak, an hour from our door, and the best acclimatisation climb in the country. Most people have never heard of it. Those who do it often say they preferred it to Kilimanjaro.
- Summit
- 4,562 m
- Duration
- 3–4 days
- Accommodation
- Huts
- Park
- Arusha
Why climb it
Three reasons. It is the most effective preparation for Kilimanjaro there is — four days at altitude a week before your main climb will do more for your summit chances than any amount of training at home. It is a better walk in its own right: a narrow volcanic crater rim with a 1,500-metre drop on one side, rather than Kilimanjaro's broad scree slopes. And you start it on foot through big game country, escorted by an armed park ranger, which is not something Kilimanjaro offers.
The first day is the one people remember. The trail crosses open grassland and forest where giraffe, buffalo, warthog, bushbuck and colobus monkeys are routine sightings. The ranger is there because of the buffalo and elephant, and walks with you the whole way.
Four-day itinerary
The three-day version skips the Little Meru acclimatisation afternoon. If Meru is your warm-up for Kilimanjaro, take four.
Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
- 1,500 m / 4,920 ft → 2,514 m / 8,250 ft
- 10 km / 6 miles
- 4–5 hours
- Rainforest
Register at Momella Gate and meet your armed ranger. The trail crosses open country with a good chance of giraffe and buffalo before entering forest, passing the Fig Tree Arch — a strangler fig grown into an archway wide enough to walk through. Overnight in huts at Miriakamba, with the crater floor below and the summit above.
Miriakamba to Saddle Hut, and Little Meru
- 2,514 m / 8,250 ft → 3,570 m / 11,710 ft
- 5 km / 3 miles, plus 2 km to Little Meru
- 3–4 hours, plus 1–2 hours
- Moorland
A steady climb through giant heather to Saddle Hut, sitting between Meru and Little Meru. Lunch, then an optional afternoon walk up Little Meru at 3,820 m for sunset over the Rift Valley. This is the climb-high-sleep-low afternoon that makes the four-day version worth it.
Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak, then down to Miriakamba
- 3,570 m → 4,562 m / 14,968 ft → 2,514 m
- 5 km up; 15 km down
- 4–5 hours up; 5–6 hours down
- Alpine to Rainforest
Leave around midnight along the crater rim. The path is narrow and exposed, with the ash cone on one side and a sheer drop into the caldera on the other, past Rhino Point and Cobra Point. You reach Socialist Peak for sunrise, with Kilimanjaro floating above the cloud fifty miles east. Then the whole thing in reverse, in daylight, which is when you finally see what you walked along in the dark.
Miriakamba to Momella Gate
- 2,514 m → 1,500 m
- 10 km / 6 miles
- 2–3 hours
- Rainforest
A different, more direct route down through forest, back to the gate and a transfer to Arusha. Most people are having lunch in town by early afternoon.
Combining it with Kilimanjaro
The usual pattern is Meru first, two or three rest days in Arusha, then Kilimanjaro. You arrive at the Kilimanjaro trailhead already acclimatised to 4,500 m, which changes the whole climb. Adding Meru to a Lemosho or Machame booking costs less than you would expect, because the crew, transport and briefing are already arranged.
